    With dicamba off the market for 2025, Beltwide weed scientists continue juggling other herbicides to control weeds in XtendFlex-based varieties bred with dicamba resistance. Whether it’s dicamba-tolerant or Enlist varieties, glufosinate combined with residuals are a must to control weeds, says Maxwell Smith, Oklahoma State University Extension IPM Specialist. “The key is using residuals,” says Smith.

    BASF’s Liberty ULTRA herbicide, powered by Glu-L Technology, has received U.S. EPA registration and is now approved for use, subject to state approvals. Liberty ULTRA herbicide, containing the active ingredient glufosinate-P-ammonium (also referred to as L-glufosinate ammonium), is the next generation of Liberty herbicide from BASF. This new post knockdown solution is effective on both broadleaves and grasses and is available for use on glufosinate-enabled cotton, soybean, corn, and canola acres.

    During the recent Tech Hub LIVE event in Des Moines, IA, David Reddel CCA RMS, Director of Agronomy Risk for Wilbur-Ellis Agribusiness, presented a roundtable on herbicide resistance and weed escape. In his role at Wilbur-Ellis, Reddel oversees the crop claims that are submitted by growers. This gives him a front-row seat to what’s happening across the industry and in the field. “One of the biggest trends I see right now is weed escape,” says Reddel.

    In a previous blog, we referred to recent research that showed fall-applied grass residual herbicides providing good ryegrass control well into the spring. In particular, that research showed that Command, Boundary and the pyroxasulfone based herbicides (Anthem Flex, Zidua) provided the best ryegrass control. At the time that blog was posted, Command was not labeled for that use pattern in Tennessee.

    Soil health management practices, such as minimized disturbance and maximized soil cover, provide numerous benefits such as reduced erosion, increased water infiltration, and increased soil productivity. Implementation of cover crops can provide an additional benefit of weed suppression, particularly important for cotton, which suffers from early season weed competition.
