By 2025, Gen Z will account for over a quarter of the global workforce. As a cohort, Gen Z does carry some defining characteristics. The most prominent is a high level of dissatisfaction with their economic and financial prospects. A McKinsey study found that, among Gen Z in the US, only 37% believed that most people have significant economic opportunities, while one-quarter believed that they would never retire. Just 41% believed that they would own a home one day.

The emphasis in the media is often on the threats facing businesses: disruption to business models and established ways of working, rather than seeking and seizing opportunities. Nevertheless, company leadership, including the CHRO, must stay aware of those opportunities. One organization currently experiencing rapid growth is the Swedish military defense and civil security company, Saab.

Connolly is Global Chief People Officer at Baker McKenzie, the global legal firm. He has held the post since 2021, having previously held CHRO roles elsewhere in the sector stretching back to 2004.
