If you are a movie fan and happen to live in San Diego, you already know that our region hosts at least 10 film festivals, (not including the student film festivals at local campuses), but there’s one that holds a special place in my heart — the San Diego Latino Film Festival. Since 2002, I’ve been involved with the festival in one way or another. I have attended, helped organize and even presented my own films. This year’s lineup has already been announced and it won’t disappoint.

Oct. 21, 2007, is a day many of us in San Diego will never forget. I was at Ocean Beach enjoying a warm sunny day with my family when we saw thick black smoke in the distance. At the time I had an infant 7 months old. Within hours, the county was up in flames. One fire grew to four, including the Harris Fire near the U.S.-Mexico border where I live. The intense heat, the uncertainty and the floating ash that looked like rain left my heart thumping. I was afraid.
