There’s something about marathons that has had me returning to them again and again for the past 15 years. It might not be an entirely healthy relationship. I train for months, forgoing other things, ache a lot, become pretty grumpy at times and then, even when everything has gone well in training, I’m still not guaranteed a good outcome on race day. Every time I train I say “I’m not doing this again. This is my last one.” And so far that hasn’t been true.

A question I get asked a lot is how to pace a marathon - what strategy to use. My answer is always even splits, though there are some caveats to that. Runners have often read about ‘negative splits’ (starting slower and getting faster) or have been told by a friend that they should start faster because they’re ‘going to slow down towards the end anyway’.

Running and racing are two different modes for me. I didn’t realise quite how different they are (other than the change of pace and number of people going in the same direction) until a couple of years ago. I was having a pretty stressful period on the domestic front. Even going for a run I’d still be worrying about things. But then I did a half marathon and when I finished I realised that during the race I’d be thinking only about running leaving no space to worry about anything else.

Support shoes don’t always get the big fanfare of other running shoe launches, which is a shame because if you’re an overpronator looking for a shoe that offer a little support and stability on your run, these shoes are every bit as exciting as the latest speedy carbon race shoe. The Puma ForeverRun NITRO 2 is a shoe that you can rightly get pumped for because it has a lot going for it.

As home workout equipment goes, a walking pad wasn’t on the top of my list of things to get. I already run three times per week, walk my son to school and take the dog out. I was pretty sure I was getting enough steps in. But I also work from home. Which means that on the days when it’s my partner’s turn to do the dog walk or the school run, and my marathon training plan has me scheduled for a rest day, I can take that advice to the extreme and clock up an embarrassingly low number of steps.

New post on Substack today on winter base training. It includes the two base training plans I give the Marathon Squad each year before they start their proper marathon training. If you're planning a spring marathon or half-marathon, give it a read. https://t.co/JXro0ChVwA https://t.co/p68TRvFBhG

I've been told MANY times over the years by people that they HATE running or just find it boring. Here are my thoughts on how to actually find joy on the run. https://t.co/8Ln5wQApug
