    State firefighting staffing is low heading into the summer, and Idaho’s once-healthy snowpack is melting at a faster rate than expected, state officials said Tuesday. “Preparedness is improving, but staffing remains a challenge for us,” Idaho Department of Lands Director Dustin Miller told the Idaho Board of Land Commissioners. He said that between 40% and 60% of the department’s engines are expected to be fully staffed with seasonal firefighters and resource foreman positions.

    Former Idaho Attorney General Anthony "Tony" Park died Friday at the age of 90. During his term in the 1970s, he started the office’s Environmental Protection Division and Consumer Protection Division. Park was one of just a few Democrats who held the position of the state’s top lawyer since the 1960s. Later in life, Park befriended a couple of his Republican predecessors, Jim Jones and Wayne Kidwell — Kidwell defeated Park for his position in 1974.

    BOISE — The U.S. House of Representatives narrowly passed its major budget bill last Thursday morning with support from Idaho lawmakers. The budget includes significant cuts to Medicaid and food benefits in addition to several other provisions.
