    The Department of Conservation (Doc) says roadkill is not a good indicator of whether 1080 poison is working in South Westland, where a recent weekend tally showed 123 dead possums on State Highway 6. Most were counted between Bruce Bay and Wanaka, especially in the Paringa area, by a Greymouth Star reporter in January. Outdoors author and longtime outdoors activist Alan Simmons, of Turangi, travelled throughout South Westland last month and said squashed, dead possums littered the road.

    The entire greater Greymouth area water supply was yesterday morning put on a precautionary notice to boil all water after possible contamination was found during routine sampling. Affected areas include Greymouth and the suburbs of Cobden, Blaketown, Karoro and South Beach, plus Boddytown, Paroa, Kaiata, Dobson, Taylorville, Stillwater, Runanga, Dunollie, Coal Creek and Rapahoe. The notice was enacted at 10am and remains in place until further notice.
