The entire greater Greymouth area water supply was yesterday morning put on a precautionary notice to boil all water after possible contamination was found during routine sampling. Affected areas include Greymouth and the suburbs of Cobden, Blaketown, Karoro and South Beach, plus Boddytown, Paroa, Kaiata, Dobson, Taylorville, Stillwater, Runanga, Dunollie, Coal Creek and Rapahoe. The notice was enacted at 10am and remains in place until further notice.

RegionsWest CoastOne of New Zealand's most prolific offenders has been nabbed in Ross, after an eagle-eyed member of the public spotted him in the West Coast township. A squad of 10 police officers descended on the area and arrested the 55-year-old man without incident yesterday.

A leaflet that encourages Greymouth residents to withhold paying their rates is causing alarm and confusion. One Cobden ratepayer said she felt "targeted" by the unwanted letterbox drop. The leaflet is signed by a group called Challenging Councils NZ, and offers suggestions for withholding the payment of rates, including setting up a private trust with fellow ratepayers, or setting up an individual private trust.

RegionsWest CoastFormer Grey District Council chief executive Paul Morris received a $90,000 golden handshake when he abruptly departed 12 months ago. The severance figure was disclosed in the draft annual report, released on Thursday. It is not known if Mr Morris was also allowed to retain any items such as electronics.
