Boil-water notice after possible contamination

The entire greater Greymouth area water supply was yesterday morning put on a precautionary notice to boil all water after possible contamination was found during routine sampling. Affected areas include Greymouth and the suburbs of Cobden, Blaketown, Karoro and South Beach, plus Boddytown, Paroa, Kaiata, Dobson, Taylorville, Stillwater, Runanga, Dunollie, Coal Creek and Rapahoe. The notice was enacted at 10am and remains in place until further notice.

RegionsWest CoastOne of New Zealand's most prolific offenders has been nabbed in Ross, after an eagle-eyed member of the public spotted him in the West Coast township. A squad of 10 police officers descended on the area and arrested the 55-year-old man without incident yesterday.

Leaflet urges residents to withhold rates

A leaflet that encourages Greymouth residents to withhold paying their rates is causing alarm and confusion. One Cobden ratepayer said she felt "targeted" by the unwanted letterbox drop. The leaflet is signed by a group called Challenging Councils NZ, and offers suggestions for withholding the payment of rates, including setting up a private trust with fellow ratepayers, or setting up an individual private trust.
$90k severance paid to council chief exec

RegionsWest CoastFormer Grey District Council chief executive Paul Morris received a $90,000 golden handshake when he abruptly departed 12 months ago. The severance figure was disclosed in the draft annual report, released on Thursday. It is not known if Mr Morris was also allowed to retain any items such as electronics.
Missing West Coast motorcyclist found dead

A West Coast motorcyclist reported missing after failing to arrive at his destination in Christchurch on Friday has been found dead near Arthur's Pass. Police would not confirm the rider's name but the Greymouth Star understands the missing man was found on Sunday morning near the Punchbowl Falls on the western side of Arthur's Pass (State Highway 73). He had left Kumara on Friday night on his black Harley Davidson to visit a friend in Christchurch.

RegionsWest CoastA police officer and an offender both required medical attention after a "volatile arrest" early yesterday in Cobden. Police were called at 7am to find a 34-year-old man allegedly smashing up his ex-partner’s house and windows. Senior Sergeant Mark Kirkwood, of Greymouth, said the man was also armed with a large hunting knife.

The scam was carried out when the man responded to a Facebook advertisement purporting to be able to double his money.
Publicans frustrated as licence suspended

A defiant publican is pressing on, despite losing one of the busiest weekends of the year in punitive action taken by the police for an alleged liquor licence breach. Hotel Lake Brunner and Paroa Hotel were each hit with three-day suspensions of their licences after police found intoxicated people on their premises. Two managers' certificates were also suspended.
Stuck in the middle with you

The spring deluge that hit Greymouth at the weekend was not going to stand in the way of newly-weds Joel and Amber Green. They were married at Omoto Racecourse at 1pm on Saturday, before floodwaters had peaked, but then realised after the first photo shoot that both entrances were under water. "So we made the most of it," the new Mrs Green said.
