    ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Two stateline high schools earn bragging rights as part of a challenge designed to get more eligible teens registered to vote. Throughout the 2024-25 school year, deputy registrars from the League of Women Voters of Greater Rockford went to high schools in Boone and Winnebago Counties as part of the Stateline High School Voter Registration Challenge. On Thursday, it was announced Guilford High School came out on top, with a total of 379 students now registered to vote.

    BELVIDERE, Ill. (WIFR) - After deliberating for a little over two hours, a jury finds the suspect in a 2021 triple homicide guilty on all counts. Alize Smith, 27, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Andrew Hintt, 31, and his two sons, Benjamin and Sebastian. Smith faces up to life in prison.     WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) - As a way to address challenges with hiring and retaining corrections officers, the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office says it is lowering the minimum age requirement for applicants. Previously, someone had to be at least 21 years old to apply. The new hiring policy lowers the age to 18. The sheriff’s office says the change was suggested by AFSCME Local 473 during regular meetings focused on recruitment and retention strategies.

    ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - The Rockford Park District will soon add a bus as a way to expand access to recreation programs and services within the community. A related video is attached to this article. During a meeting Tuesday night, the park district Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of a new passenger bus. Money for the bus will come from donations made to the Rockford Park District Foundation.
