The man behind a town’s first snooker hall who became the “talk of the town” when he beat superstar professional Willie Thorne has died. Renowned amateur player Ron Rowe organised exhibition matches in his hometown Herne Bay with household names including John Virgo and Dennis Taylor. Born in Walthamstow in 1928, Ron moved to Kent as a young father with wife Eileen, when his day job as a blind fitter took him to the seaside town for work.

Forecasters have upgraded Kent’s heat-health alert as temperatures are expected to exceed 30C today and could reach 34C in some places by the weekend. An amber warning is now in force until 9am on Monday - and is an upgrade on previous yellow alerts that had been in place at the start of this week’s heatwave. The Met Office says it expects the mercury to hit 31C or 32C in parts of the south east by Thursday afternoon, which would make it the hottest day of the year so far.
