Margaret Lucas’ remarkable “full and happy life” also saw her spend close to 30 years raising money for the RSPCA in Deal and volunteering at her local library delivering books to housebound pensioners. Born in Scotland on August 16, 1922, Margaret grew up at Nairnside in Culloden where her parents owned a farm.

    Sightings of a hairy caterpillar that can make humans and pets very unwell must be reported but people are being urged not to touch the tree pest. The Forestry Commission says it is already receiving accounts of oak processionary moth caterpillars causing “painful rashes” because a warm, sunny spring has meant their growth is higher than in previous years. The caterpillars, predominantly found in the south east, tend to emerge between May and July to feed before turning into adult moths.

    A team of plucky cyclists have completed the trip of a lifetime by pedalling from Pluckley to Paris to raise money for young people in care. Despite getting their first puncture before the team had even reached the Channel crossing at Dover - the pelaton powered through the 260 miles to reach France’s capital on the challenge’s third day. The team were not deterred by a puncture near Dover and went on to ride the 260 miles to Paris.

The proposal - to bring the first miniature engine and carriages to the county’s coast - has been debated at a meeting in Deal. Land trains are a common sight in many coastal towns popular with tourists - with services in resorts such as Eastbourne, Bournemouth and Weymouth.
