    At 7.30pm one February evening, Michael Tamatea had just knocked off his shift cooking at a Levin restaurant and headed to the pub next door. Twelve hours later he was found dead in a pond at a beach 15 minutes' drive away. Police have declined to answer RNZ's specific questions, and say his death is not suspicious - but his whānau have told Lauren Crimp they think otherwise. Michael Joseph Tamatea - Mikey to most - was quite the character.

    Associate Housing Minister Tama Potaka has told officials to ensure people escaping domestic violence aren't turned away from emergency housing. Labour leader Chris Hipkins raised the issue in the House two weeks ago. The Prime Minister denied Hipkins' claim that women and children fleeing violent homes were "no longer eligible" for emergency accommodation. "That is not happening. Those services are available and that support is available," he said.

Matthew Ryan's lawyer Michael Bott represented him in Wellington District Court on Tuesday. Ryan's attendance was excused.

    A passenger on a plane struck by lightning on Friday evening has described hearing an almighty bang, and says it was a terrifying experience. Air New Zealand said NZ625 from Auckland to Queenstown was turned back for engineering checks as a precaution after lightning hit the plane shortly after departure. A woman on board, who did not want to be named, told RNZ the flight got off to a rough start.

Waipawa's Bibby Street could be mistaken for a state highway, such was the amount of traffic. Trucks, trailers and diggers were there to clear silt and move rubbish and debris. Cars delivered kai to volunteers mucking in. People showed up every few minutes. "How can I help?"
