    A major flood warning has been issued in central Victoria, after the state was drenched by significant rainfall overnight. Heathcote was the hardest hit, with 165mm of rain falling in the past 24 hours. Redesdale, east of Bendigo, recorded 133 mm— with 55mm lobbing in two hours. Residents surrounding the Campaspe River between Lake Eppalock and Barnadown, south of Bendigo, were told to move to higher ground on Monday morning, with more than 130mm falling in the river catchment since 9am Sunday.

    A major flood warning has been issued in central Victoria, after the state was lashed by severe storms and significant rainfall overnight. Residents surrounding the Campaspe River between Lake Eppalock and Barnadown, south of Bendigo, were told to move to higher ground on Monday morning, with more than 130mm falling since 9am Sunday. The Campaspe River at Barnadown is currently at 5.17m and rising, and may reach 6m — similar to the November 2010 flood level — by late morning.

    More than 10,000 homes are without power after severe storms swept across the state. SES volunteers responded to more than 300 calls on Wednesday night and into Thursday with units in Wodonga and Wangaratta the busiest. A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said that the strongest wind gust of 106 km/h at Yarrawonga on Wednesday afternoon.

    Manningham council’s Carols by Candlelight at Ruffey Lake Park has been cancelled for safety reasons, as high winds batter Melbourne. It comes after Geelong’s Carols by the Bay was cancelled last weekend because of bad weather. Manningham council posted a notice on Friday informing the public that it had cancelled its popular carols event “due to forecasted high-risk weather conditions (with) unpredictable winds reaching up to 90kms per hour and the possibility of thunderstorms”.
