Industrial action across Victoria’s regional rail network on Friday morning could have “knock-on effects to services throughout the day”, causing pain for Taylor Swift concertgoers. Friday morning commuters are also being warned to prepare for chaos. The Rail, Train and Bus Union (RTBU) on Thursday said a V/Line strike between 3am and 7am “may have an impact on services for fans travelling to Melbourne for the Taylor Swift concert” in the evening.

An earthquake has rattled parts of Victoria and Melbourne in the early hours of Friday. Geoscience Australia said the 4.3 magnitude quake struck near Leongatha in Victoria, about 130 kilometres south east of Melbourne, but was felt as far north as Sunbury and Wilson’s Promontory in the south. The quake hit at 12:49am Friday morning with 4920 locals reporting they felt the tremors, including people in South Australia and Tasmania.

Manningham council’s Carols by Candlelight at Ruffey Lake Park has been cancelled for safety reasons, as high winds batter Melbourne. It comes after Geelong’s Carols by the Bay was cancelled last weekend because of bad weather. Manningham council posted a notice on Friday informing the public that it had cancelled its popular carols event “due to forecasted high-risk weather conditions (with) unpredictable winds reaching up to 90kms per hour and the possibility of thunderstorms”.

Emergency services are responding to reports of fallen trees across Melbourne, as strong winds batter the state. Just before 1pm on Friday there were reports of fallen trees in suburbs including Mill Park, Alphington, Abbotsford, Thornbury, Brusnwick, Heidleburg, Melton, St Kilda, Northcote, Deer Park, Surrey Hills, Craigieburn and Maidstone.
