    From January 30–February 2, UBC Opera put on their version of Street Scene at the Chan Centre and unfortunately, it was a slightly underwhelming affair — save for select standout performances. Street Scene was first written by Elmer Rice as a play — which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama — in 1929. Kurt Weill then adapted it into an opera of the same name, which premiered in New York in 1947.

    UBC’s latest financial statement outlines the university’s finances up to March 31, 2024, with $1.9 billion allocated to employee compensation. This is an increase from the $1.7 billion reported for the previous fiscal year. UBC Athletics’s staff made up almost $5.8 million of this year's total remuneration, which is $1.4 million higher than the previous fiscal year.

    As I approach my fourth December in university, you’d think I’d be more used to balancing my academics with the holiday spirit. But I’m not. I’m burning out faster than my candy-cane-scented candle. My laundry is piling up alongside my assignments. I’m worried and overthinking about what my life will be like post-grad and what that means for the found family I have here. But during the 66 minutes I spend watching Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas, none of that matters.

    On Sunday afternoon at BC Place, the Toronto Argonauts defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a 41–24 upset for the 111th Grey Cup, after a strong fourth quarter performance from the Argos. UBC alumni Kyle Samson and Daniel Kwamou were in attendance as players — Samson for the Blue Bombers and Kwamou for the Argonauts. Samson was drafted by Winnipeg after graduation this summer while Kwamou played for the T-Birds from 2018–22.

    Last summer, a group of rock climbers from Squamish — James Klemmensen, Amanda Bischke, Shira Biner and UBC grad Noah Besen — embarked on a 42 day trek to climb in the Coronation Glacier on Baffin Island, Nunavut. The Gnar-Whal’s Odyssey tells the story of that expedition.
