    The Federal Highways Administration (FHWA) yesterday announced $1.2 billion in federal funding to support state transportation departments in reducing carbon emissions from transportation infrastructure materials. California’s Department of Transportation (Caltrans) was awarded $32 million to establish programs aimed at reducing the embodied carbon emissions of concrete and asphalt used in the state’s transportation projects.

    The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) just took another significant step toward making offshore wind a reality off the California coast. At the Commission’s business meeting today, commissioners voted to unanimously adopt a Proposed Decision that, among other things, sets a need determination of 7.6 GW of offshore wind by 2035.

    The federal government announced the most significant investment in curbing greenhouse gas emissions from heavy industry last month. The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) will give 33 projects up to $6 billion to demonstrate technologies that decarbonize the production of steel, cement, aluminum, and other materials with carbon-intensive production processes.
