Metro Vancouver, Canada’s third-largest urban region, could reach and surpass the key population milestone of three million residents in 2024. Based on population estimates from British Columbia government statisticians, Metro Vancouver’s 23 local jurisdictions and municipalities could reach a combined population of 3.021 million in 2024. This is an increase from the estimated 2.935 million residents in 2023 and 2.842 million residents in 2022.

In a heated meeting interrupted several times by outbursts in a packed gallery, Edmonton city councilors decided Monday they needed more time to consider declaring a state of emergency over housing and homelessness. In a 9-4 vote, councilors decided to return to the matter on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.Mayor Amarjeet Sohi proposed the idea after days of dangerously cold temperatures and several arrests at a nearby homeless camp. “People are dying,” Sohi said.

Many Canadian distance runners made their way to Texas last weekend for the 2024 Chevron Houston Marathon. One of the best performances was achieved by the Masters runner from Calgary Maria Zambranowho finished 20th overall with a time of 2:44:34, setting a new Canadian W50+ Masters record. Zambrano, 53, beat her previous best time of 2:46:14 at the 2022 TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon by almost two minutes. Her previous best also represented the Canadian record for the W50-54 age group.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin has joined the NHL/NHLPA’s player assistance program and will be away from the team indefinitely. The league and union announced Monday that Nichushkin will return to the Avalanche once he is cleared by program administrators. No further information was provided. Nichushkin, 28, is the second Avalanche player to participate in the Player Assistance Program this season.

TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Elks have completed a trade, the teams announced Monday. Toronto has acquired defensive lineman Jake Ceresna and the rights to a negotiated roster player in exchange for receiver Kurleigh Gittens Jr. and Toronto’s seventh-round pick in the 2024 CFL Draft.
