Heather Stefanson is no longer leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba. The former prime minister announced over the weekend that she would resign on Monday. She said the role was an honor of a lifetime. “Looking forward, I am excited to watch our party continue to grow as our members elect a new leader and stand up to this NDP government,” Stefanson said in a statement. Stefanson was first elected as an MLA in 2000 and was the first woman to become premier in Manitoba.

Metro Vancouver, Canada’s third-largest urban region, could reach and surpass the key population milestone of three million residents in 2024. Based on population estimates from British Columbia government statisticians, Metro Vancouver’s 23 local jurisdictions and municipalities could reach a combined population of 3.021 million in 2024. This is an increase from the estimated 2.935 million residents in 2023 and 2.842 million residents in 2022.

In a heated meeting interrupted several times by outbursts in a packed gallery, Edmonton city councilors decided Monday they needed more time to consider declaring a state of emergency over housing and homelessness. In a 9-4 vote, councilors decided to return to the matter on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.Mayor Amarjeet Sohi proposed the idea after days of dangerously cold temperatures and several arrests at a nearby homeless camp. “People are dying,” Sohi said.

The union representing Transit Windsor workers will hold a news conference at noon Tuesday to discuss upcoming strike action. The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 616 announced a 72-hour strike on Thursday, but said on Sunday that it had decided to temporarily postpone the strike for a few days to continue negotiations. Still, “there are still many obstacles and Transit Windsor must significantly improve its offering – or a strike will occur,” the union said in a statement to media on Monday.

As Albertans woke up to another day of extremely cold temperatures, the province’s power grid operator had put another grid alert in effect to warn of erratic power supplies. At 9:21 a.m., the warning was lifted, which the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) attributed to renewable energy capacity coming online.

Tiny shacks to house homeless people could soon be coming to Chatham as community officials in Chatham-Kent look for new ways to address the growing housing and homelessness crisis. A plan for 50 transitional huts to replace Victoria Park Place by May 2025 will be submitted to council, while final capital costs and recommended locations still need to be identified for final approval. “Obviously it’s a growing problem,” said the South Kent district attorney.
