    It’s Pride Month again and I want to start this article on PROUD, dentsu’s LGBTQ+ network, with a reflection on my personal coming out at the workplace and how this initiated the many steps both myself and dentsu have taken over the past years. Being openly gay in my private life for years, I tended to not speak about private issues in a professional setting. This changed unexpectedly at one business dinner when other male colleagues were speaking about their wives.

    In today’s workplace, we confront a pivotal barrier to gender equality – the care gap. I’ve often said, “We are losing our best leaders to caregiving,” which predominantly impacts women, especially those in what I call the “messy middle,” when they’re balancing increasing responsibilities at work with those at home. During these times women are most likely to step back from their careers, leading to a significant drop off in female leadership.

    At the end of March, the Philadelphia Orchestra premiered “Vespers of the Blessed Earth,” the most recent work of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Luther Adams. Critics have described “Vespers” as a marked, climate change-inspired departure from Adams’ previous compositions — ”direct and message-driven”; a score that “mourns and damns, and declares where in the past Adams might have simply observed.” But Adams is surprised that reception to “Vespers” has invoked so much politics.
