COLUMBIA — Three years after admitting men on campus, Columbia College has hired its first men's basketball coach in anticipation of its inaugural season this fall. Jake Deer, who has worked in college athletics for more than two decades, joined Koala Athletics on April 1. He came to South Carolina's capital city from West Point, Georgia, where he coached at Point University. "Jake is the perfect addition to our team at Columbia College," said Columbia College Director of Athletics Glen Crawford.

COLUMBIA — The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, one of the state's biggest tourism draws and the most popular zoo in the South, is getting a multimillion dollar upgrade. The zoo, which straddles Lexington and Richland counties and spans the Saluda River, plans to add a new primate habitat, a restaurant on the banks of the Saluda River, a gondola taking visitors across the river and nature trails exhibiting native animals.

CAYCE — Cayce's mayor accused her four council members of violating transparency rules and insinuated that the all-male council broke laws after they unanimously voted to replace her as the city's representation on several committees. However, councilmembers refuted the claims, saying that council planned to put new members on the committees well before the meeting, and that communications about the plan were transparent.

LEXINGTON — Once a private summer hot spot for South Carolina Electric & Gas employees and their families, Pine Island's sandy Lake Murray shores are set to open to the public in mid-fall 2024. In a March 26 presentation to Lexington County Council, representatives from S.C. Parks, Recreation and Tourism announced formal plans to open the island as a state park.

LEXINGTON — As Lake Murray makes its name as one of the Midlands biggest draws, the region's tourism agency is hoping to unlock a secret marketing weapon — podcasting. Capital City/Lake Murray Country's monthly podcast, which the tourism organization rolled out in October 2023, is meant to feel like a conversational way to spark interest in travelling to the region, said the group's Marketing and Communications Manager Kelly Hughes.
