ON THIS DAY in1886 Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta sells the first Coca-ColaLocally,The Illinois Department of Transportation is hosting a career fair Thursday, May 22 in Carterville. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John A. Logan College in the Hancock Center/F Wing, 700 Logan College Drive. Parking is free and available in the gold and blue lots. Staff will be available to discuss technical and administrative support opportunities at multiple IDOT locations throughout the area.

ON THIS DAY in 1952 The concept of the integrated circuit, the basis for all modern computers, is first published by Geoffrey Dummer. The Miss Southern Hope Pageant, organized by Arrowleaf, is coming up on June 14th. Proceeds from the event benefit Arrowleaf’s Client Choice Food Pantry, which provides essential food assistance to individuals and families in need throughout the region. The pageant is open to young women ages 5–19 and includes four age divisions.

ON THIS DAY in 2004 TV sitcom "Friends" airs the series finale of its 10th and final season in the US, attracting 52.5 million viewers. Locally, Carbondale Main Street invites you to its summer Brown Bag Concert Series. The series is one of our region’s longest running events. Concerts are held at Carbondale’s Town Square Pavilion each Wednesday in May and June from Noon to 1 p.m. Concerts are free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own seats and lunches.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, David Lee Roth, is the latest performer to join the Grandstand lineup at the Du Quoin State Fair this summer. The legendary rocker is scheduled to headline on Saturday, August 23rd. Roth, the voice of Van Halen, left an indelible mark on rock music while helping define the sound of the 80s with anthems like “Jump” and “Panama.” His high-energy performances and unique vocal style quickly made Van Halen one of the biggest rock bands of the 80s.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ long-awaited off-highway vehicle park in southern Illinois will officially open to riders on Friday. Sahara Woods State Recreation Area near Carrier Mills in Saline County features Illinois’ first state-managed off-highway vehicle (OHV) trail system in Illinois. The nearly 30 miles of two-way trails are designed to meet a growing demand for motorized recreation. The Sahara Woods trails were funded in part by federal grants and IDNR capital funds.

ON THIS DAY in 1967 Aretha Franklin releases her single "Respect" (written by Otis Redding); Billboard Song of the Year, 1967 In Carbondale, Tharran Hobson, Southern Illinois Program Director for the Nature Conservancy (TNC) will present “Dog Tooth Bend”, a landscape-scale floodplain restoration project in Alexander County. Hobson will also discuss TNC partnerships with the Army Corps, the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

ON THIS DAY in 1937 First commercial flight across the Pacific, operated by Pan Am. Locally, Volunteers are needed for the Little Grassy Lake Cleanup on May 3rd from 8-11am. Volunteers will meet at the Little Grassy Campground to help pick up trash which has been revealed during the lake drawdown.
