South Africa is hosting Zimbabwe in a World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) U18 World Cup African qualifier to battle for a spot in the U18 world cup in Japan from September 5 to 14. The two countries meet in a five-match series at the Boksburg Cardinals main diamond with a double header today, another double header tomorrow and the final match on Sunday (January 19) morning.

East Athletic Club (EAC) middle-distance runner Gift Nkosi is among the star names in the province expected to challenge for titles when the CGA senior and youth track and field season starts on January 25. Nkosi is expected to dominate in the province but it’s at the national track and field championships in April where she hopes to win her first title. She clinched a bronze medal in the U20 girls’ 5000m race in 18:32.58 and finished the 3000m fifth after clocking 10:39.83.

Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) veteran runners Jane Nielson and Evangelina Thompson secured top 10 finishes in their categories at the Biogen Half-Marathon in Bedfordview on January 12. Neilson completed the women’s grandmasters (60-69) race in ninth place in 02:10:12. Mapenza Zondo of Ulinda AC won the event in 01:50:06, while Yvonne Laing of Team Vitality clocked 01:54:59 for second place. Lynn da Silva of Jeppe Quondam settled for the last podium position in 01:57:21.

Although his matric journey was not filled with interesting anecdotes, like playing in the ICC U19 World Cup or jetting off to India to play in the IPL like young Proteas seamer Kwena Maphaka, Easterns colts spinner Sabelo Mabanga also had a lot of juggling to do in 2024. Like Kwena, Sabelo found a working formula that ensured neither his cricket nor school work suffered.
