I have been in change management or innovation work in payments for over 20 years and I have been hearing ‘change is the new normal’ for every single one of my working days. And although we keep saying it, it is no less true for being a cliché. In fact, it has been true every time we have said it and, weirdly, it keeps being even more true the next time we say it. I was in a lift the other day. A public lift. Taking a bunch of strangers from the station, down to the platform to catch an underground train. Those lifts are regular, in case you are wondering. So are the trains. But people often act like their life depends on making this particular train. This particular lift. This exact moment. So I am in the lift. The lift is full. The door is closing. A woman who is just entering the station decides this is the lift her life depends upon catching.

I had a professor at university who said things like ‘glocal’ and ‘phygital’. It was the 90s. It felt edgy. We all nodded sagely when he said things that were essentially nonsensical. Like we knew what he meant. But the older I get, the more I wonder if he knew what he meant. Of course, it is useful to test the boundaries and continued usefulness of terminology and, as a sociologist, he was doing the right thing, perhaps, in forcing us to think about the changing world we are trying to describe.
