My good friend Steve has this memory of me, from about 15 years ago, leading an innovation workshop at the bank we both worked for at the time and saying something wacky along the lines of: “Yes, but what would a goldfish do?”Now. I have no recollection of this. But I absolutely believe him both because it's Steve and because... it sounds like the sort of random thing I may say to get people moving. Plus, I remember where it came from, even though I don't remember saying it.

Always have the red line meeting before any commercial negotiation. No matter how advanced the conversations are or how experienced you are. Leda Glyptis, Resident Thought Provocateur, FinTech FuturesIt continues to amaze me that people go into commercial negotiations without having had a 'red line meeting'. If you are one of those people, please read this piece and... stop. Just stop. Never, ever do that again. Always have the red line meeting before any commercial negotiation.

Many, many years ago, I was in the middle of one of those conversations that can very easily become an argument if you’re not careful. But I was careful. I was at Fintech Meetup last month moderating an all-star panel. We were talking about the cost and opportunity of modernisation for organisations with limited budgets. And although our panel was meant to focus on community and regional banks (where that statement holds true more than in many other places)... if you stop to think about it… is there any organisation that doesn’t have a limited budget? Even if it is huge, one’s budget is never a bottomless magic treasure chest.

I have been in change management or innovation work in payments for over 20 years and I have been hearing ‘change is the new normal’ for every single one of my working days. And although we keep saying it, it is no less true for being a cliché. In fact, it has been true every time we have said it and, weirdly, it keeps being even more true the next time we say it. And the next time. Life in payments isn’t dull, that’s for sure.
