    John Rudge managed Port Vale between 1983 and 1999 [Pete Stonier]Permission has been granted for a statue of former long-serving Port Vale manager John Rudge to be erected outside the football club. Money has been raised for more than two years for a bronze cast statue of Mr Rudge, who managed the club between 1983 and 1999. It will be more than five metres high, and will stand outside a pedestrian access to the ground on Hamil Road, Burslem.

    A property in Sheldon was badly damaged and five people in the area were treated for injuries [BBC]Five people have been treated by paramedics and two homes have been damaged following lightning strikes in Birmingham and the Black Country. The roof of a property in the Sheldon area of the city and another in Lower Gornal, Dudley, caught fire on Tuesday morning. Of the five patients checked over elsewhere in Sheldon, four had minor injuries and one was taken to hospital.

Paramedics were called to the waterway off Hendon Avenue, Ettingshall, at about 18:00 BST on Sunday. The child had been rescued from the canal by police officers and was in a critical condition, said West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS). Despite everyone's efforts he could not be saved, they added.
