Next came Spain's espeto or fish skewers and the Indonesian porridge called papeda. Bibimbap searches were particularly high in India, followed by Singapore, Sweden, the Philippines and Malaysia. The surge is probably due to the popularity of Korean TV dramas, which tend to feature a lot of eating.

Samsung is determined to steal a march on rivals by releasing the new flagship Galaxy S24 smartphone on Jan. 17 in San Jose, California, industry sources said Wednesday. No premium phone has ever been launched so shortly after Christmas. Samsung used to release its new top-range gadgets in spring, but release dates are increasingly being pulled up as competition in a saturated market intensifies. It unveiled the S8 on March 29, the S9 on Feb. 25, the S10 on Feb. 20 and S20 on Feb. 11.

Samsung's next flagship Galaxy phone will feature an AI-assisted live translation function so users can chat to foreigners in real time. Samsung on Thursday said the Galaxy S24 will the Live Translate Call feature that allows users to "talk" in a foreigner's own language, regardless what kind of smartphone the other person carries. Audio and text translations will both appear in almost real time.

Samsung will release a new mid-range smartphone here next month. The Galaxy S23 FE, which was released overseas earlier this month, will be made available in Korea as well in an apparent bid to take on Apple, which released its latest iPhone 15 series last week. The phone retains most of the key features of the Galaxy S23, including a 50-megapixel high-resolution camera, but comes with relatively affordable prices.
