    Health insurance companies across the country have agreed to streamline and simplify the prior authorization process for patients seeking certain medical treatment, according to a nationwide industry trade group. Cigna, UnitedHealthcare and many other groups are voluntarily taking part in the multiyear initiative, according to America's Health Insurance Plans,  a national insurance trade group that pushed for the change.

    Mather Hospital's new, expanded emergency department is set to open later this summer. The Port Jefferson-based Northwell Health hospital began construction on the new ER in May 2023 and is awaiting final approvals from the state health department. The $78 million new facility is 29,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 55,000 patients annually, up from 13,000 square feet and the capacity for 38,000 patients, said hospital president Kevin McGeachy.

    Cosmetics chain Sephora will open a new store at Green Acres Mall as part of the Valley Stream property's ongoing redevelopment. The 5,300-square-foot store will be adjacent to the Cheesecake Factory with an exterior-only entrance, the mall confirmed to Newsday. Sephora is expected to open spring 2027.

    Catholic Health has partnered with Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky on a new initiative that will see the 21-time world champion help the health care system spread the word about preventive wellness strategies. The program, "Optimizing Your Health for Greater Performance," will be rolled out through videos and print material featuring Ledecky, with plans for in-person engagements this fall, said Dr. Patrick O'Shaughnessy, president and CEO of Catholic Health.
