If IT and business leaders can say anything about 2023, it’s that it was the year of “balanced growth.” In striving for this goal — growing topline revenues while simultaneously improving operational efficiency — many rightly prioritized operational transformation. But that was easier said than done at a time of surging inflation, rising interest rates, workforce reductions and the growing pressure placed on digital infrastructure and services. The focus for the year ahead must change.

For years now I have seen people talk about Jupyter Notebooks, but I was never sure exactly what they were for. They are tied to Python and academic use, so I never found it convenient to fire one up. Explanations from Python users usually involve references to other Python tools — always a bit of a problem with over-confident ecosystems. Even in my last post, I mentioned Jupyter Notebooks in reference to talking to an LLM.

OpenAI made news this week for adding more memory to ChatGPT and revealing Sora, a new text-to-video model, but developers may be more interested in other announcements the company made. OpenAI gave developers the ability to control more granular permissions on their API keys for specific endpoints. That’s particularly important for enterprises that want to build on the API, according to a company spokesperson.

Netlify’s new Chief Technology Officer Dana Lawson has a confession: She finds JavaScript “painful.” It’s an admission given a bit sheepishly since the cloud-based web development platform’s target audience is frontend developers. “I did a rodeo tour of JavaScript. I’m a terrible JavaScript developer, and I work at a frontend company,” Lawson laughed.
