Stephanie Vergara, a student at Nashville State Community College, has lived with her family in Antioch’s Suburban Mobile Home Park since 2013. Last year, a tow truck started waking them up in the middle of the night.

But when listening to people reminisce about Opryland USA, it doesn’t feel like it’s been more than 25 years since Nashville’s last major theme park closed.

In 2004, Ken Stewart took a 35-mile boat journey to visit and clean the Henrietta Marie monument. The underwater monument, which lies close to the wreck of the slave ship Henrietta Marie off the coast of Florida, is dedicated to the memory of African victims of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. The GPS device used to navigate gave the divers only a rough approximation of the ship’s location. “They finally found the monument,” says Stewart.

In August, homeowner Brian Beach came to the Metro Historic Zoning Commission with plans to build an extension in front of his 1930s home in the Hillsboro-West End neighborhood. Beach had done his research: He’d reached out to the commission multiple times and proposed a design similar to nearby structures.
