First released in 2021, Everhood became a surprise hit that arrived in the right place at the right time. We were still locked in our houses due to the pandemic, games were being postponed due to developmental setbacks, there was nothing new in the horizon at the time. That trippy nonsense of a game arrived like an LSD-drenched missile and captivated me with its weird art style, rhythm-based gameplay, and plot twists.

What are the odds that, in the span of less than two weeks, I’d end up playing not one, but TWO 2D platforms featuring the same gimmick of using the recoil from a shotgun as a means of propulsion? Seriously, out of so many gimmicks one could come up with, a very creative premise idea like this is developed in tandem by two completely different studios, with both products being released almost alongside each other. Sacre Bleu was the first one to come out, a game I ended up liking a lot.

Whenever I think I’m starting to, once again, get fed up to the brim with roguelikes/lites, another one shows up with an actually interesting and addictive premise to win me over again. It was like this with Balatro last year, and whilst I don’t think Haste is as good as that literally dangerously addictive piece of interactive software, I’ve been playing it non-stop on the Asus ROG Ally, where it ended up being an absolutely perfect fit.

I will be honest and admit that, at first, I knew very little about Captain Blood, and that I was initially drawn towards it due to the fact it was basically being portrayed as a pirate-themed, God of War-inspired hack ‘n’ slash, with somewhat old-school visuals. And by old-school, I mean Xbox 360-era visuals. Face it, the damn thing is turning 20 this year, that’s already retro. Upon finding out more about the game’s shockingly troublesome developmental history, I realized I had to play it.

I feel like Sobaka Studio’s outings get less and less interesting with every new release, even if they always grab my attention right from the getgo. It all started with the over-the-top, but amazing Redeemer: Violence Awakened, an ultraviolent top-down brawler with an amazing combat system and pretty good presentation.
