Google’s recent I/O event brought an array of announcements, mostly focused on AI. However, near the end of the keynote, Google turned to Android XR, providing an update on its spatial computing platform and running a live demonstration on a pair of smart glasses. Shahram Izadi, who leads Google’s efforts on extended reality (XR), said: “Glasses with Android XR are lightweight and designed for all-day wear, even though they’re packed with technology.

We’re on the cusp of developer conference season, with a host of events set to kick off in the coming weeks as major technology companies set out their stall for the rest of 2025 and beyond. This includes Google I/O, which takes place next week and usually sees the company articulate its strategy for all its software platforms, with a healthy focus on AI. We expect AI on devices to be a major theme of multiple events, as we wrote about here.

On 18 March, Intel’s new CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, took over from Pat Gelsinger. Mr Tan previously held the role of CEO at Cadence Design Systems from 2009 to 2021, where he reinvented the company and drove significant shareholder value. Crucially, he also served as a member of Intel’s board from September 2022 to August 2024. The news has been warmly received on the basis that he’s a relative outsider. Intel has taken an alternative path to its usual policy of recruiting from its internal executive ranks.

It’s been a busy week at CES, the tech show with a sprawling presence along the length of the Las Vegas strip. For many attendees (myself included), there’s an element of pride in the step count achieved each day, as we traverse the hotels, ballrooms and convention centre in search of exciting new breakthroughs in tech. However, “search” really is the operative word here. Anyone following the CES news flow may well have been disappointed by the lack of breakthrough gadgets being unearthed.
