    With over a decade of releases under their belt, Lebanon Hanover have solidified themselves as a major goth revivalist in contemporary music. Taking their name from the neighbouring towns of Lebanon and Hanover in New Hampshire (USA), the band deals in dark and minimal aesthetics, taking cues from the post-punk and goth rock of the 1980s. With their latest EP, Better Than Going Under, the band turn their gaze towards acoustic guitars.

Wade through the greeting cards and platitudes and you’ll unearth a Melbourne band described as a “rock duo," a phrase that does them little justice. In the decade since they released their first album, Shawcross, Melbourne musicians Liam Parsons and Stefan Blair have leant further and further into the tenderness that defines Good Morning.

    A festival experience is often shaped by the cultural storm that precedes it. Pitch Music and Arts 2024 was somewhat different. Our usual excitement about arriving and discovering which artist or stage would captivate us the most quickly shifted to concerns about the festival's duration and which performances we would manage to see. Amid a looming heatwave and the threat of wildfires, the festival concluded abruptly, but not without gracing people with a sonically intense finale.

    As I was revisiting this album I was reminded of something that slipped my mind: “Little Deer,” the first song on The Turning Wheel, was my song of the year in 2021. This is noteworthy for the moment, since I’m currently at work on tallying Treble’s best albums and songs of the year (no spoilers!). It’s a phenomenal song, laden with strings, gorgeously arranged and impeccably written.
