Not to be confused with ego or selfishness, pride drives us to have emotional reactions to things of generally little or marginal value. And in doing so, we ultimately harm ourselves and others.

    League City’s doubling homestead exemption a winner of an ideaKudos to League City council members who unanimously voted in favor of doubling the homestead tax exemption for residents who are disabled and those at least 65 years old. The homestead exemption for qualifying residents will be raised from $100,000 to $200,000. That is a big deal for the people targeted for such a benefit. Property taxes are an ugly matter – especially for individuals on fixed or limited income stages of life.

    Hundreds of people laced up their running shoes to raise money for literacy this past Saturday at The Daily News Press Run – Mainland held in Texas City. Tens of thousands of dollars were raised to fund placing newspapers and other reading materials into the hands of students across Galveston County. The program, Newspapers in Education (or NIE), is sponsored by The Daily News and works with school and teachers to help bring reading tools into classrooms.
