1. IntroductionThe maritime environment encompasses more than 70% of the Earth’s surface and is the world’s biggest ecosystem, with very changeable and hostile physicochemical conditions (low temperature, restricted light availability, high salinity and high pressure). The world’s oceans and seas contain approximately 90% of our planet’s biological biomass, which is dominated by unicellular microbes [1].
