On 15 April, Star Wine List hosted an awards ceremony in Tokyo to announce the best wine lists in Japan, during ProWine Tokyo. Osaka proved the standout wine destination, counting for eight out of the 11 Gold Stars presented by Star Wine List’s Krister Bengtsson with judges Reeze Choi and Toru Takamatsu MS. Other winners spanned from Tokyo to Nagano. Star Wine List of the Year is our celebration of the sommelier teams behind the great wine lists of the world.

On 5 May, Star Wine List will travel to New York for the third time, to announce the best wine lists in the Big Apple and wider metropolitan area, at Star Wine List of the Year New York 2025. Star Wine List’s resident roving ambassador, Job Seuren, reports from across the world but, for his latest report, has focused on his home country of the Netherlands. We asked him what its wine scene is looking like right now. Job Seuren was named Gault&Millau Netherland’s Sommelier of the Year 2024. He is an owner of the “no fuss” Michelin-starred Zoldering restaurant in Amsterdam and also writes for De Grote Hamersma wine guide.

Star Wine List’s Basque Country Ambassador, Aitor Maiztegui, has selected six new Red Stars across Rioja – use our new guide to discover the best places to drink wine in the region. Aitor Maiztegui is Head Sommelier at the three-Michelin-star Azurmendi restaurant, just outside of his native Bilbao. After training in London, San Sebastián and Madrid, he returned to his hometown to collaborate with chef Eneko Atxa, who first opened Azurmendi in 2005 and boasts five Michelin stars to his name.
