More than half of Australian employers have reduced their gender pay gap in the last year but many still have an average gap outside the target range. The second data publication released by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) shows just one in five Australian employers have an average gender pay gap in the target range of -5% and +5%. But the analysis also shows 56% of employers improved their gender pay gap in the last year.

Tesla chair and Blackbird partner Robyn Denholm, has one-upped Atlassian’s Mike Cannon-Brookes, part owner of US NBA team the Utah Jazz, by buying an entire basketball league, the WNBL. The deal between the Wollemi Capital Group Syndicate (WCGS) and Larry Kestelman’s National Basketball League (NBL) consortium to acquire a majority stake in the Women’s National Basketball League was signed last week. From April next year, Denholm’s family office, Wollemi, will own 49% and the NBL, 29%.

The dream is over for drone delivery startup Swoop Aero, with creditors voting on Tuesday to place the venture capital-backed business in liquidation. Swoop raised more than $26 million in VC funding, with CSIRO-backed Main Sequence, impact fund Giant Leap, US investor In-Q-Tel, the defence tech investment arm of the CIA, Artesian, Folklore Ventures and Right Click Capital among its investors.

The system, which uses Wi-Fi signals to collect data from devices such as mobile phones, is being trialled on a small number of Sydney light rail services for one year, which began on 20 March 2024.

But that gender gap is even bigger at 25% among chief executive officers, according to figures collected for the first time in 2023–24. And the widest gap of all is among older workers, with women in their late 50s typically earning $53,000 less each year than men the same age.
