Premier David Eby and California Governor Gavin Newsom each gave breezy summaries of their brief video chat Monday that left the impression it was a pretty routine get-together. But the next day, Newsom announced an ad campaign aimed at stemming the noticeable drop in Canadian visits to the U.S. and encouraging “northern neighbours” to visit his state. You get the impression something was left off the public list of topics discussed.

The Trump administration’s focus on retribution against individuals and organizations that disagree with him may be curbing B.C.’s effort to rally U.S. protests against lumber price hikes. Premier David Eby is talking to U.S. politicians about the issue — he had a virtual meeting with California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday. But Forests Minister Ravi Parmar said U.S. organizations and businesses that will have to deal with higher lumber prices when the higher duties hit seem reluctant to speak up.

There was a colourful caution on the Canadian side in the early days of the tariff war regarding the strategies that might be used to bring U.S. President Donald Trump to his senses. Various people noted: “We have to avoid punching ourselves in the face.” It was a reference to retaliatory measures that would end up hurting Canada more than the U.S.Premier David Eby is clearly keeping the advice in mind.

Education Minister Beare has installed a special advisor to rewrite Vic board of education’s rejected safety plan. Has until Jan 6 to get board to go along with it.

Education Minister Lisa Beare warned Victoria board of education this AM that if it doesn’t produce a better safety plan than the one it submitted she could use her authority to terminate them.

Education Minister Lisa Beare will be making announcement on school safety in the Greater Victoria School District tomorrow am.
