The AFL world is mourning the death of former Richmond and Collingwood player Andrew Krakouer. Krakouer, who played 137 games at the Tigers between 2001 and 2013, suffered a suspected heart attack in Perth on Sunday. He was 42.

After missing the finals this year, and with some of their best players another year older, Collingwood, and coach Craig McRae, have already flagged how they intend to navigate the upcoming trade period. “I say to the list mismanagement, ‘I don’t want picks, I want players’,” McRae said in a recent interview.

Astonishing backlash launched at Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley after the post-game scenes last night. So he made a plane motion and aimed a few slights at Hawthorn’s Jack Ginnivan. Here’s a big question for the reigning premiers: how exactly can a side that played finals in 2022 and 2023, and looked all ready to fire again, simply putter their way through 2024 – and why? Below are my ten reasons Collingwood’s 2024 has been underwhelming.

Melbourne premiership utility Alex Neal-Bullen wants out of the club despite being under contract until the end of 2026. Barring a miracle, Collingwood’s ill-fated premiership defence has come to an end. It’s a season that’s spluttered from Round 0, given false hope briefly, imploded spectacularly, and then attempted a near-impossible resuscitation. Now, with the loss to Sydney, it’s over.

Did anybody expect Collingwood’s 2024 to unravel as spectacularly as it has? While some (particularly among Collingwood diehards) will say that injuries derailed 2024, and they’ll be back next season, I’m not so sure. The profile of Collingwood’s list shows an aged top end: Scott Pendlebury (36), Jeremy Howe (34), Steele Sidebottom (33), Mason Cox (33), Jamie Elliott (31), Brody Mihocek (31), Tom Mitchell (31), Will Hoskin-Elliot (30), and Jack Crisp (30).

Last week on Channel Nine’s ‘Footy Classified’, Sam McClure posed that Collingwood were missing Mason Cox, prompting colleague Kane Cornes to reiterate one of his recurring criticisms: just how little Mason Cox statistically contributes to the Pies. Although he polarises football fans, I don’t mind Cornes. I think he has the courage to speak his mind, whereas many other journalists play it safe.

Sitting back a fortnight ago, watching Collingwood’s comeback against North Melbourne from a nine-goal deficit, I was one of the few people who just wasn’t that excited. Nine goals down. Overrunning a young North Melbourne team, almost certain to win the wooden spoon, why not feel the exhilaration everybody else – or at least every other Collingwood supporter – did? What an accomplishment! Right? It was just the latest in Collingwood’s litany of miraculous wins.
