The most important result in Round 14 was Greater Western Sydney’s 11-point victory over the reigning premiers Brisbane at the Lions home ground, the Gabba. It not only proved that GWS is well and truly in the mix for the premiership, but that the club no longer relies on the original champions to make the play.

It has taken much longer than anticipated, but Brisbane’s Charlie Cameron has made it into the AFL’s Top 100 goalkickers with his three goals against the Gold Coast Suns in the final game of Round 8 at the Gabba. After four games this season that had reaped only five majors, Cameron sat on 408 goals, three short of matching the total achieved by Melbourne legend Fred Fanning in 1947, and earning Cameron the distinction of being the only player to score 400+ goals and not make the list.

The games of the Gather Round, when all matches are played on the same weekend in South Australia, went off without a hitch. All games were decided by decent margins and – at the end of the round – the Top 14 teams could all be considered to be in the race to the finals. For me, however, this round was bookended by the two South Australian teams, and was all about goal-kicking highlights.

Round 3, which means every team has played somewhere between two and four games – courtesy of the opening round and the byes – is as confusing as a form guide as is the ladder, but some things are known. Hawthorn, Brisbane and Adelaide are the clubhouse leaders, having won all their games so far this season. Gold Coast has won both their games so far, but it is hard to get too excited just yet as their opponents so far have failed to win a game.
