KPLC caught up with the krewe around the lunch hour, halfway through their journey to the Allen Parish Civic Center. Captain Marcus Ryder, a third-generation captain, explained why it’s important to keep the tradition alive. “‘Cause if we don’t continue what we doing here, we’re going to lose it,” Ryder said.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A Lake Charles woman wanted on manslaughter charges in the death of her toddler has been arrested in Mississippi. Summer Buxton was arrested around 2:45 p.m. at a motel in Jackson, Miss., Deputy Chief Franklin Fondel, with the Lake Charles Police Department, confirmed. Buxton was arrested by the human trafficking division of the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office. Fondel said she was caught after law enforcement received information she was likely in the area.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - A toddler whose parents face manslaughter charges died of acute drug intoxication according to a coroner’s report. Keynan Buxton, who was two months shy of his second birthday when he died in May, had methamphetamine-fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl in his system. Coroner Terry Welke listed his manner of death as a homicide. Three people are charged with manslaughter in his death.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Of the 65 people Gov. John Bel Edwards has pardoned since October, 41 were convicted of murder. Four of those are Southwest Louisiana cases - three out of Calcasieu and one out of Jeff Davis Parish. In Calcasieu, David Wade Foy, 70, was convicted of murder in the 1970s; Herbert James Fuselier, 55, was convicted of second-degree murder in 1990; and Darryl Sterling, 62, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 1992.
