Typically, economic shocks are, well shocking. They emerge as a surprise- a war, a natural disaster, a pandemic, a stock market crash. They are rarely predicted, predictable and self-imposed. Economic theory and reason would suggest that individuals and nations will utility-maximise, they will always try and make themselves richer in all circumstances. As ever, Donald Trump proves the exception to the rule.

Sometimes in journalism, as in life, you make the wrong call. Last year I decided to head to my bed rather than watch the seminal TV debate between Trump and Biden, and woke up to a hundred messages of “HAVE YOU SEEN IT?!” or “WTF” and “I think Biden is about to collapse!!” and everything in between. As someone who sometimes struggles with sleep, I prioritised my slumber and regretted it. Last night, I made the opposite move, and regretted it again.

I noted at the start of my last post that these are dark days. Scanning the titles of my posts on Substack so far, I’m conscious of how bleak it has all felt. I can’t take the blame for that, the world is what the world has become, but in today’s offering I’m determined to offer some remedy- because there is hope for a different world.

Striking that both Trump’s enemies and diehards are all convinced this is a masterplan. Either that he’s deliberately shorted the market or it’s all a strategy to make other countries negotiate. This is his great ability: he convinces his foes and allies alike that he’s a genius
