    Last night, when the push notification about Liverpool appeared on your phone- what was your reaction? Horror, worry, disbelief, for sure; but I’d bet anything that there was something else, a very particular political angst in the pit of your stomach- at the very least there was for me. A sharp intake of breath accompanied by an anxiety: if this is terrorism, if it’s been committed by a certain type of terrorist (and even if it wasn’t)- what comes next?

    Close your eyes, hold your breath, listen hard- and it all comes back. The fevered talk of surrender, the endless tedious cascade of zero sum arguments, accompanied by the sum of zero insights- an obsession with fish. To listen to British political discourse on 19th May 2025 was to be transported to the endless slog of the late 2010s, or to put it another way, to my late twenties.

    There is a a solitary comfort for Labour MPs right now: however poorly in any particular area they might believe their government is doing, there is time for them to do better. Except, as one Labour parliamentarian ruefully whispered to me the other day- “there is less time than ministers seem to think.” Nearly one-fifth of their mandate, “one day in five we’ve got”, has already expired. That first fifth should have been, on paper, some of the most productive of the entire parliamentary term.

    Reform won the Runcorn by-election by just *six* votes- that’s the narrowest margin for any by-election since 1892. For once, I’m glad I set the alarm clock for 530am rather than staying up.
