Sometimes in journalism, as in life, you make the wrong call. Last year I decided to head to my bed rather than watch the seminal TV debate between Trump and Biden, and woke up to a hundred messages of “HAVE YOU SEEN IT?!” or “WTF” and “I think Biden is about to collapse!!” and everything in between. As someone who sometimes struggles with sleep, I prioritised my slumber and regretted it. Last night, I made the opposite move, and regretted it again.

I noted at the start of my last post that these are dark days. Scanning the titles of my posts on Substack so far, I’m conscious of how bleak it has all felt. I can’t take the blame for that, the world is what the world has become, but in today’s offering I’m determined to offer some remedy- because there is hope for a different world.

These are dark days. In less than a month, the restored Trump presidency has appeared to dismantle, at least for now, many of the traditional pillars and assumptions of the post-war era. A month ago, Joe Biden was President of the United States, and for all of his sclerotic tendencies and faults, while he held that office no-one was in any doubt where the President stood: that he believed in the Western alliance, favoured democracies, abhorred autocracies, and would defend Europe.

Hello from Hastings, and apologies for the radio silence for a couple of weeks. Or rather, the fact there’s been very little radio silence from me these last two weeks is why there’s been silence here. Filling in for the James O’Brien on his mid-morning LBC slot, alongside the Sunday show and News Agents has rather sapped my writing time. But the great man is back, so therefore are the etchings here.
