    On Good Friday, dozens gathered to put on a reenactment of the Stations of the Cross at Cathedral of Saint Matthew in Aldine. The largely Latino congregation came out to see the biblical story performed in Spanish that afternoon. Lexi Parra went to photograph the theatrical ritual. One family in particular, the Payáns, were in attendance. The Houston Landing spent weeks with them, as Alejandrina Morales was fighting for her husband to be released from ICE detention.

    On Feb. 24 Erik Payán, a tire shop owner and beloved grandfather who has been in the United States for over 20 years, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. His arrest was one of over 100 people who were detained in a joint immigration enforcement operation targeting Colony Ridge, their largely Latino community. The development had been targeted for years by state and national politicians with anti-immigrant rhetoric and false claims of widespread criminality.

    Tears of relief rolled down the cheeks of Alejandrina Morales at 10:25 a.m. on Thursday when she received the news that her husband, Erik Payán, the breadwinner of their household and father who was detained during last month’s major immigration raids in Colony Ridge, had been granted bond by an immigration judge. “Dios Santo,” “Holy Lord,” she repeatedly said while listening to her lawyer recount the morning’s hearing.
