Before Cassie’s intervention, the building was a classic industrial warehouse – a ‘concrete shell’ as she describes it. “It was very run down, factory-like and unappealing,” she laughs. The showroom – adjacent to the CJH Studio office – was formerly Linear Standard’s supply and logistic centre. After outgrowing their previous space and acquiring a new warehouse, Cassie was left with the perfect space to create a residential-like showroom.

The two-bedroom house is divided into three parts; a central open-plan kitchen, living and dining space and an adjoining pool terrace, flanked by the bedrooms with ensuites each overlooking an olive tree. No matter where you are in the home, you’re guaranteed a framed view of the olive trees, and as the sun slowly slips away behind the mountains, the trees cast spectacular shadows throughout each room.

Santa Clara is housed within an 18th-century building in what João regards as one of the most romantic squares in Lisbon. João was determined to honour the building’s rich heritage while establishing a strong contemporary connection, which Manuel is renowned for in his work. The architect took great care balancing the past and present and ensuring the design reflected Portuguese life and culture.

Akin to centuries-old Japanese houses, or ‘Minkas’, Her sits on stilts and comprises an office, tea room, bathroom and a Japanese garden designed by Sebas Mesdag. Stepping stones lead to the floating, stand-alone studio, where a solid-timber door foreshadows the predominant use of timber throughout the space. Conchita and Avalon meticulously studied traditional joinery and structures from Japan and Indonesia to engage in a thoughtful dialogue between materials and spaces.
