Simon Building occupiers described their experience with campus security as “humiliating and discriminatory” after a disabled student was locked out from lifts and bathrooms. On the evening of the 26 March, campus security placed a bike lock on the doors connecting Simon Building rooms 3.44A and 3.44B to the rest of the third floor. Due to the floor layout, students with accessibility needs could not access the lifts. Additionally, the women’s toilets on that floor were also blocked off.

A Manchester PhD student has received a racist email after enquiring about accommodation on SpareRoom.com The student received the email from the host of the two-bedroom house in Hulme after enquiring about the accommodation. The unnamed landlord said that they would not accept a tenant “from the Indian subcontinent” because they “lie too much”, are “filthy”, and “abscond without paying dues”. The host wrote: “I have stopped taking Indian students for quite a while now”.

The University of Manchester President and Vice-Chancellor Duncan Ivison and CEO of the Students’ Union Ben Ward were hosted by the Exec Officers in an open meeting about student activism on November 14. Students were invited to submit questions online beforehand, as well as to ‘upvote’ others’ questions to be asked to Ivison and Ward.

Medical students are allocated to Clinical Education Campuses (CECs) for the third and fifth years of their studies. However, students are not guaranteed a place at a hospital in Manchester. In recognition of the commitments of elite sportspeople, some students are exempt from being placed outside of Manchester in their third year. The policy enables a select group of students to keep up with their sporting commitments.

The University has sent 18 undergraduates on placements at Sellafield Ltd since concerns regarding the degradation of safety began to circulate in November 2022. The company, which was previously involved in creating the nuclear deterrent, now works with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority to create sustainable nuclear energy. However, The Guardian has reported that a ‘toxic culture’ at Sellafield risks ‘compromising the safety of Europe’s most hazardous nuclear site’.
