As wildfires continue to wreak havoc on Los Angeles, UC Berkeley has extended financial support for impacted students through the FASO Student Emergency Fund. The fund allows the Financial Aid and Scholarships team to quickly award funds to students facing unexpected circumstances, said Cruz Grimaldo, associate vice chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs, Financial Aid and Scholarships and Cal Student Central.

Jason Spingarn-Koff, UC Berkeley professor of climate journalism, was short-listed on Academy Awards for two of 15 short films up for nomination this year, putting his name in the hat for his possible fifth Academy Award. The first film up for nomination is “A Swim Lesson,” which Spingarn-Koff codirected alongside Rashida Jones. The short film captures themes of parenting and embracing life’s challenges through the story of a child learning to swim.

This November, over half of the ballot measures in Berkeley were pro-tax — the most the city has seen in a single voting session in over ten years. Five tax measures – W, X, Y, Z and FF – passed, supporting new, increased or extended taxes to support unhoused services, public libraries, public parks, healthy beverage choices and street infrastructure. Two tax measures – EE and GG – failed.
