The Sun Lakes Playhouse brought the children’s classic story, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” to the ballroom last month, with glorious costumes and a very engaging cast. Gerry Dominici did a marvelous job keeping in character as the narcissistic emperor, after an enthusiastic “Hi, Grandpa!” echoed from the front row at his entrance. The rest of the cast did an excellent job at the Royal Fashion Show and Shopping Spree as the story unfolded.

Last week, the MCH ballroom was filled with a breath of fresh air as the new food and beverage management team laid out lofty plans for our three venues: the lounge, the restaurant and Sandwedge. FirstService Residential will continue as our HOA management company, but CCL Hospitality Group (aka “Compass”) will be our new management company for all food and beverage operations as of Tuesday, April 1.

The Sun Lakes Playhouse presented an original musical extravaganza, “Travel Club Capers,” last weekend. Featuring many singing and dancing groups, the play told the story of four Banning ladies (played by Deborah Martinsek, Patty Barille, Ramona Lott and Vicki Wood) who travel by air to New York, Hawaii, Italy and Mexico. They encounter many interesting characters along the way.

The Friendship Club presented The Magical Comedy of Rob Rasner as its offering in March. Rasner’s exciting show combined truly amazing magic and comedy with hilarious audience interaction. Rasner’s incredible magic and side-splitting humor, combined with musical sound effects and audience participation, immediately charmed and endeared the audience. Sun Lakes residents are invited to join the Friendship Club and enjoy Vegas-style entertainment up close and personal.

The Yiddish Culture Club presented “Hava Nagila, the Movie” as its selection for Movie Night in February. “Hava Nagila, the Movie” is a documentary about the history and meaning of the ubiquitous Jewish song (and dance) “Hava Nagila,” which has been covered by dozens of singers and celebrities around the world. Featuring commentary by Harry Belafonte, Leonard Nimoy and others, the movie includes clips of numerous singers and orchestrations.

At its monthly dinner meeting in March, the 80s Plus Club bid a tearful, bittersweet farewell to Lee and Michael Stone of Tin Man’s Heart. A fixture on the entertainment scene in Sun Lakes for over 10 years, the Stones are moving to the San Diego area at the end of March to be closer to family. The 80s Plus Club is open to any Sun Lakes resident who has attained the glorious age of 80, as well as spouses and significant others who may be a bit younger.

At the Garden Club’s February meeting, club member Janis Rice gave a presentation on the Tongass National Forest, which includes 17 million acres in Southern Alaska. Named for the area’s Indigenous people, it is the most northern rainforest in the world. The area offers the chance to view bald eagles, bears, spawning salmon and the breath-taking vistas of “wild” Alaska. At 44,000 miles from the equator, the Tongass enjoys a temperate climate, with 90 to 120 inches of rain each year.

Arlene’s Breakfast Club (ABC) hosted Fontay “Tay” Mozga, resident services coordinator for Liberty Village, a newly constructed affordable housing project in Beaumont. The community provides 38 apartments for veterans with disabilities, those who have experienced chronic homelessness and low-income veteran families. Currently, there are 70 residents living in the apartments, which include 19 individuals and families with 26 children.

The Yiddish Culture Club presented The Killer Dueling Pianos at its installation dinner in January. The electrifying show was an awesome success, lasting almost until the Sun Lakes dinner staff was prepared to turn off the lights in the ballroom!The Killer Dueling Pianos is an entertainment company consisting of 12 talented pianists who travel across the country in pairs, delivering song after song for hours without a break.

The Friendship Club scored another hit last weekend with PureBread, a ’70s tribute band for prolific singer/songwriter David Gates and Bread. Although Bread was only active from 1970-73, then again in 1976, some of their music is classic and enduring, like the theme from “The Goodbye Girl,” which was written by Gates. “I Wanna Make It With You” became the No. 1 song on the charts in 1970.
