The Banning City Council appointed two members to an ad hoc committee for “discussing issues with the Larry Smith Correctional Facility” during its June 10 meeting. It will also include two members of the community. Councilmembers Leroy Miller and Cindy Barrington volunteered for participation in the committee, and their appointments were approved unanimously. “The purpose is to discuss the releases from the Banning jail into Banning,” Mayor Sheri Flynn said.

Stagecoach Days is a vital part of Banning’s culture, a signature event that is among the longest running and largest in the city. Held across two days in September, Stagecoach Days brings residents and visitors alike to the A.C. Dysart Equestrian Center for a rodeo. The Stagecoach Days Association revealed the success of last year’s events, and reminded council about the dates of this year’s rodeo and parade, at a recent Banning City Council meeting.

The council held a Skate Jam event earlier this year, with the support of several sponsors including Oakley, Blue Zones and Codex Skate Shop, the latter making it “official.” Around 150 people attended the event, which included a free skate session and raffles. Attendees also expressed their creative skills, painting on an art wall available at the event. “Anyone who was there was allowed to draw some stuff on the wall,” Smith said.

During a recent city council meeting, the city explored the fiscal impact of the cannabis industry within Banning, and whether modifications to the tax were necessary.

The Banning City Council recently heard from the developers of the industrial park replacing the municipal airport, a project that has been in progress for several years. The Banning council members were asked not to offer support or opposition to the project during the June 5 workshop session. It was an informational session only. Banning committed to closing its airport nearly a decade ago, first completing an Airport Feasibility Study in 2016.
