The New York City Department of Buildings issued two violations to Luna Park following an incident that involved the Cyclone, Coney Island’s nearly 100-year-old rollercoaster. The violations include failure to maintain due to the cracked sprocket, and failure to notify the DOB of the incident. The Cyclone will remain closed until the necessary repairs are made and the ride passes inspection.

St. Ann’s Church hosted a summer picnic for the Mott Haven community. Parishioners celebrated St. Ann’s Day during services, then enjoyed a barbeque. The New York Blood Center partnered with the Van Cortlandt Jewish Center to host a blood drive Sunday during a season when it is especially hard to maintain an adequate supply. Blood drive organizers say the summer shortage is usually a result of people taking vacations and a higher demand for blood. They say the higher need for blood can often be due to people getting injured, or some illnesses that can get worse in hot weather.

People who live near Sexton Place and Wickham Avenue say the trash buildup has become a serious problem over the past six months. They tell News 12 that the Department of Sanitation comes to clean about every two weeks, but as soon as they leave, the trash piles up again. These residents are accusing unknown illegal dumpers of unloading trucks full of trash onto Sexton Place.

A funeral service was held on Thursday for an NYPD recruit who died just days before he was set to graduate. The service, held at St. Anselm and Roch Church, was attended by hundreds of NYPD members, who came to pay their respects to Ordonez. They were also joined by Mayor Eric Adams, Police Commissioner Edward Caban, and other elected officials. Ordonez was just five days from graduating from the police academy when he died during a physical exertion training exercise on July 10.

Some residents gained a new appreciation for local waterways Saturday at the SUNY Maritime College waterfront during the annual “Boogie Down to the Sound” event. Volunteers and boating instructors drove people around in speedboats, and marine specialists hosted kid-friendly activities. There were also kayaks available for families who wanted to cruise around in the water.
