A slashing at a shelter on the Grand Concourse has put two people in the hospital, according to law enforcement officials. News 12 spoke with the wife of one of the victims, Destinee Melendez, who says that it all started with an argument involving another couple. Advocates and elected officials came together outside of the Brooklyn Public Library on Thursday to demand an end to a "power grab" from Mayor Eric Adams. Mayor Eric Adams launched a Charter Revision Commission in May that put out a list of changes to the city's constitution, impacting how the city handles things such as public safety and budgeting. Those changes will be voted on by New Yorkers at ballot boxes in November.

A 37-year-old former math teacher in Brooklyn has been charged for allegedly enticing or trying to convince teenage students from four schools to send him images of nudity and sexual performances. The defendant, Winston Nguyen, faces charges of use of a child in sexual performance and promoting a sexual performance by a child as sexually motivated felonies.

Legal action is now being taken against Gov. Kathy Hochul's indefinite pause on the city's congestion pricing plan. The first lawsuit attacks Hochul for blocking the 2019 MTA Reform and Traffic Mobility Act. That act established the tolling system that would be used for congestion pricing.

A baseball coach in Bedford Park joined News 12 for an exclusive interview remembering the scary moments he was assaulted on Harris Field. The coach, who did not want to share his identity or show his face on camera, says he spent over 12 hours in the hospital on July 4 after he was stabbed moments after a practice. Coaches who were present for the incident tell News 12 that earlier in the day a fight broke out between two of the kids.

Two families say their cars burst into flames while they were driving on the road. Alex Krupp and her husband were on a road trip together in their 2022 Volvo XC90 that they say went up in flames along the Bruckner Expressway in April. “The fear didn't really set in until later because it was such this fight or flight mode of we have to get out,” said Krupp.

The mayor's chief of staff said on Wednesday that the city is working toward opening 20 smaller shelters across the city in an effort to increase safety. Chief of Staff Camille Joseph Varlack says that if the trend of fewer migrants coming to New York City continues, larger shelters that have shown to be safety issues, including the Hall Street and Ryerson Street shelters where violence has taken place, will be closed.

A funeral service was held on Thursday for an NYPD recruit who died just days before he was set to graduate. The service, held at St. Anselm and Roch Church, was attended by hundreds of NYPD members, who came to pay their respects to Ordonez. They were also joined by Mayor Eric Adams, Police Commissioner Edward Caban, and other elected officials. Ordonez was just five days from graduating from the police academy when he died during a physical exertion training exercise on July 10.
