1 INTRODUCTION Cotton-top tamarins are a primate species endemic to Colombia (Mast et al., 1993). These tamarins have a dispirited backstory related to their former use in biomedical research facilities. Specifically, in the 1960s, it was discovered that their physiology rendered them a suitable model for studying a variety of human diseases, from Epstein–Barr virus to colitis and colon cancer (Mast et al., 1993).
