At the turn of the millennium, the hotelier Alois Hinteregger was walking on a sun-kissed slope of the Plose massif when he stumbled on a derelict building. He sensed it had a special energy and soon found out why: it had been built in 1912 as a tuberculosis sanatorium for the Austro-Hungarian nobility in a place known for its pure mountain air. Then the First World War broke out, South Tyrol became part of Italy, and the building was eventually abandoned, the forest springing up round it.
