If life had taken a different turn, it might well have been Sam Neill KC, rather than Sir Sam Neill, international acting legend. The 76-year-old star once imagined himself grandstanding in a courtroom and even studied a year of law at the University of Canterbury. “I’m a frustrated barrister – I would have quite enjoyed the performative aspect,” explains Sam. “I’m quite good on my feet.”Fortunately, he gets to act out those dreams on the small screen.

The Assembly, a new ABC documentary series, introduces us to a diverse group of autistic people who are interested in pursuing journalism careers. The first episode strikes a nice balance between introducing the Macquarie University students, showing their classroom experience and an interview with a celebrity – in this instance, New Zealand actor Sam Neill. Other interview subjects in the series include singer Delta Goodrem, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and footballer Adam Goodes.

It’s tough poolside at The Calile Hotel in Fortitude Valley’s swish James Street precinct. I mean, you risk getting stalked by your own sun lounge after lolling by the pool sipping a libation. Or at least this happens to Jack Chettra, star of the cute short film Poolside Attraction, which you can see now on the hotel’s website. (“We know you love our pool chairs but did you know that they love you too?” asks the hotel)And when I say short film, I mean really short, bless them. It’s just 92 seconds.
