The United States Congress has proposed cuts to Medicaid, reversing the Affordable Care Act expansion.1 These cuts could increase mortality and financial hardship for enrollees while straining health-care providers, especially in rural and underserved areas. Here, we estimate the potential effect on mortality and catastrophic health-care expenditures, defined as out-of-pocket costs exceeding 30% of household income.

This was a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2 trial of inulin for the purpose of preventing gut pathogen colonization and infection in the ICU. Patients were randomized 1:1:1 to placebo, inulin 16 g/day, or inulin 32 g/day beginning on October 14, 2019. Prior to enrollment of the first patient, a data and safety monitoring board (DSMB) was appointed which had full access to the study data.

Epigenetic clocks can quantify DNA methylation by measuring the methylation levels at specific sites in the genome, which correlate with biological age (BA). Accelerated aging, where BA exceeds chronologic age, has been studied in relation to cancer development, but its utility in cancer prevention remains unclear. Accelerated aging holds promise as a tool to explain the increase in early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC).
